The Present is Female
When it seems that our divisions make breaking news and our differences publicly broadcasted, Moco’s Contemporary Masters bridge these gaps to tell a story of many becoming one.
The Hero by Marina Abramović cuts through the noise for an extended pause within our fast-paced world. Atop a horse, white flag in hand, Marina Abramović presents one of her most profound and personal pieces. By exploring physical limitations and the possibilities of the mind, Marina Abramović passes through different mental states during her acts of performance in the quest for emotional and spiritual transformation.
In the artist’s words, “every day is a shaky, uncertain, constantly changing landscape. We need heroes that can bring new light to illuminate us. Heroes that can inspire us to be better, and to work together, not against each other. Heroes who care.”
Contemporary artist Tracey Emin uses her voice and neon words in her own handwriting to speak loudly on themes of love, connection, and deeply personal truths. More of You by Tracey Emin floats before us as a title to our desires. She urges us on an intimate exploration of self-expression and the complexities of our own relationships. The intimacy glowing behind her personal statement moves us to wonder: When was the last time you gave all of yourself to someone or something?
Art for All
Moco Museum creates accessible shows and exhibitions that enlighten, inspire, and empower the community. As a result, Moco has quickly become a leading destination for art lovers around the world.
As the name suggests, modern and contemporary art makes up the Moco Museum Collection. Works currently on display and from past shows include Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst, KAWS, Jeff Koons, Hayden Kays, Mungo Thomson, Julian Opie, and more.
Within our collection, Moco exhibits a diversity of contemporary art. For example, Jeff Koons is famous for playing with popular culture to create new, unique iconography that is reflective, literally. Speaking of icons, in his own contemporary art style, Damien Hirst takes only 12 dots and 4 colors to create Mickey Mouse. Experience the full scope of Contemporary Masters at Moco Museum Amsterdam as you question the world around us with Hayden Kays and become timeless with Mungo Thomson.
Contemporary master Hajime Sorayama travels across the universe for inspiration, and under artificial lights, a robot’s metallic skin glows, and she levitates before us. An impressive sculpture, we experience distance and closeness as she embodies a fantasy that is enchanting and unsettling. Her alien presence, trapped in a custom-fit lightbox, forces us to confront our relationship with the natural and the artificial. Untitled_Sexy Robot type II floating by Hajime Sorayama invites you to experience close encounters of the third kind at Moco’s Contemporary Masters Exhibition.
We use the power of art to challenge the norm, champion the truth, open up minds, and question the world around us.
Voice of the Streets
Moco embraces the voice of street art because it connects people, challenges ideologies, and activates involvement. In Amsterdam, Moco Museum has made it a point to exhibit works from artists who encourage conversations about our world and shared existence. For example, the French contemporary artist, photographer, and activist JR takes focus with his unique collector’s piece The Gun Chronicles. Combining art and journalism, JR interviewed 245 participants to present diverse views on gun laws and ownership with equal representation.
Moreover, the work of Icy & Sot – Iranian street artists, brothers, and activists – comes to life with the augmented reality Moco Play App. Their art involves themes of human rights, capitalism, and socio-political issues, as well as drawing attention to our global refugee crisis. Additionally, Moco Museum Amsterdam has embraced other contemporary voices such as Osgemeos, KAWS, Invader, Stik, and pillars of pop culture Takashi Murakami x Virgil Abloh with their collaborative Time piece.
Not all artworks are always on display.
Our collection exhibits artwork on loan and from the Moco Collection. We keep our exhibitions ever-evolving, so every visit is a fresh experience. Occasionally, this means some artworks online are not always on view in the museum. We appreciate your understanding.
