Simply Haring: A New Keith Haring Exhibition in London

This page announces the exhibition “Simply Haring”. Simply Haring is a temporary Keith Haring exhibition at Moco Museum London, open from 2 October 2026 to 2 January 2027. It brings together attributed Subway Drawings with prints, posters, publications, objects and collaborations.

From Subway Drawings created for passing commuters to Pop Shop objects, festival posters and social campaigns, Keith Haring continually found new ways for art to reach people. Simply Haring brings these different worlds together.

Keith Haring needed little to make an image unmistakably his own. A line, a moving figure, a few marks suggesting energy. What is perhaps less immediately visible is just how many different places that language could go.

Opening at Moco Museum London on 2 October, Simply Haring brings together attributed Subway Drawings with prints, posters, publications, objects and collaborations. The exhibition expands the story beyond Haring’s celebrated drawings in the New York subway to explore what happened as his imagery moved into galleries, music, nightlife, popular culture and public campaigns.

From Subway Drawings to Popular Culture

The breadth of that journey can be seen in the objects themselves. A Pop Shop shopping bag sits within the same exhibition as a radio and colouring book; posters created in connection with the Montreux Jazz Festival appear alongside material relating to a Swatch breakdance championship, Luna Luna and exhibitions across Europe and the United States. In these different formats, the same figures, lines and symbols continually reappear. Their surroundings change, but Haring’s visual identity remains immediately recognisable.

The works presented as part of the Simply Haring collection are generously on loan from the Simply Haring Collection and Alessandro C. Della Morte.

This ability to move between contexts was fundamental to the reach of Haring’s work. His imagery was never confined to a single material or setting. It could exist in a gallery and on a shopping bag, as part of a festival poster or a publication. Through the Pop Shop in particular, Haring challenged conventional distinctions between fine art and popular culture, finding another way for his work to circulate beyond traditional art spaces.

Haring drew to reach people. Not some people. All people.

Keith Haring’s Art as Public Communication

Simply Haring also shows how the accessibility of this visual language could carry considerable weight. Works including Free South Africa, Nuclear Disarmament, Crack Down! and Ignorance = Fear / Silence = Death address apartheid, nuclear weapons, drug abuse and AIDS awareness without abandoning the energetic figures and direct graphic language associated with Haring’s wider practice.

The contrast between form and subject is significant: imagery that appears playful and immediate could simultaneously become a vehicle for protest, awareness and public communication.

Where Keith Haring’s Visual Language Took Shape

At the centre of this story remains Haring’s experience of drawing in the New York City subway. Between 1980 and 1985, unused advertising panels provided him with surfaces on which to work quickly in chalk, often in front of passing commuters. The underground became a place of experimentation, helping Haring refine the direct visual vocabulary that would eventually travel far beyond it.

By placing attributed Subway Drawings alongside the wider collection, Simply Haring brings these different aspects of Haring’s practice into one conversation. Posters, publications and everyday objects are not peripheral to that story; they show how successfully his visual language could adapt to different audiences and purposes without losing its identity.

What emerges is a picture of an artist whose work was constantly in circulation. From chalk drawings encountered by commuters to imagery carried through music, exhibitions, activism and popular culture, Haring created a language that could move with freedom between worlds.

“If I only made art for galleries, I would probably be frustrated all the time.”

We had a great visit to MOCO. A smaller exhibition space concentrating on modern, contemporary, street, digital, and immersive art. The exhibition space is well setup with plenty of space between the exhibits from a lot of well known names and some not so well known names. Definitely worth a visit!

Fantastic modern art museum. Lots of pop art and great exhibits and installations from some well known artists. Lots of bold colours, a feast for the eyes. Great ticket price too. Not too crowded, always an important factor when visiting galleries / art museums. Best museum I’ve been to in a while.

I loved it. Exciting, memorable, inspiring. Now we came across it again in London. ❤️ There are artists whose work I would’ve never discovered otherwise — like Robbie Williams’ creations beyond music… amazing! Love it. I truly hope more and more big cities will have something like this. The world becomes a better place with spaces like these 🤞 I wholeheartedly recommend it! For thinkers. For wanderers. For parents with kids, or just a visit with a friend. Enjoy the ride — and pass it on.
