Who is Samuel Salcedo?

Born in Barcelona in 1975, the artist Samuel Salcedo trained in Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona before continuing his studies at Manchester Metropolitan University. He began his artistic career as a painter, but transitioned into sculpture in search of a more direct, visceral language.

A formative period in the studio of renowned artist Jaume Plensa played a role in shaping his artistic development. There, Salcedo strengthened his technical discipline while deepening his understanding of the expressive potential of the human figure. Today, his work is celebrated for its emotional intensity, technical mastery, and conceptual depth.

As a contemporary artist, Samuel Salcedo is best known for his psychologically charged sculpture practice. His hyper-realistic yet distorted faces place Samuel Salcedo’s sculptures in a space between figuration and introspection, where realism becomes a tool to explore vulnerability and identity.

Samuel Salcedo examines the duality between public image and private reality, using exaggeration and stillness to slow down our reading of emotion. Often isolated from the body, his faces appear frozen mid-gesture in expressions that oscillate between humour and discomfort, empathy and unease.

Technically, Salcedo works with a wide range of materials, including polyester resin, polyurethane, aluminium, iron, and bronze. He frequently combines sculptural processes with painterly techniques: the resulting surfaces may appear translucent, dense, or rough.

    Visiting the MOCO Museum in Barcelona was one of the highlights of my trip. It’s a place where modern, contemporary, and digital art come together in the most dynamic way full of color, creativity, and unexpected emotions. The museum is located in the heart of El Born, inside a beautifully restored historic building that contrasts perfectly with the modern art inside. From the moment you enter, you feel the vibrant energy each room has its own mood, from powerful visual installations to immersive digital experiences.

    I really recommend visiting the Moco Museum. I was astonished by the artworks there. I’m keen on contemporary art, so I was delighted to see works by Andy Warhol, Banksy, and others. The museum is very interactive, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere. There’s also a special room with light installations it was incredible! Besides, they have an amazing gift shop with souvenirs at affordable prices.

    I had the amazing opportunity to visit it this week and it honestly left me speechless. As someone who deeply loves art, I was thrilled to see works by some of my favorite artists: Banksy, Yayoi Kusama, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and so many more! They’re also currently featuring a temporary exhibition of artworks by Robbie Williams. I was so surprised, he’s not only a talented singer, but also an incredible artist!     I especially loved how the exhibition combines world-famous artists like Banksy, Basquiat, and Andy Warhol with emerging digital creators and NFT art. It’s not a typical “quiet” museum it’s interactive, emotional, and modern. The NFT and digital rooms were fascinating they make you reflect on how art, technology, and human creativity are merging today. Lighting, music, and the flow between rooms are very well designed, so you never feel bored or overwhelmed. The curators clearly thought about how to make art feel accessible, emotional, and current. Staff were friendly and helpful, and the museum shop also has great souvenirs and art books.
