Girl with Balloon (2004)

One of Banksy’s most famous and emotionally charged pieces, Girl with Balloon first appeared on a wall in Southbank, London, in 2002.

The artwork depicts a young girl reaching out for a heart-shaped balloon drifting away. The accompanying phrase, “There is Always Hope,” transforms the image into a symbol of optimism.

In 2018, a framed version famously self-destructed during a Sotheby’s auction. The shredded work was renamed Love is in the Bin, reinforcing Banksy’s critique of the commodification of art.

Love is in the Air (2005)

Also known as Flower Thrower, this work depicts a masked protester preparing to throw a bouquet of flowers rather than a weapon.

The juxtaposition of aggression and peace has made this artwork one of the most recognised images associated with Banksy in Barcelona and worldwide.

Di-Faced Tenners (2004)

Banksy created altered ÂŁ10 notes featuring Princess Diana and the phrase “Trust No One.”

Distributed at public events, these notes challenged authority, questioned financial institutions, and demonstrated Banksy’s use of subversive humour.

Smiling Copper

Smiling Copper presents a life-size riot policeman whose head has been replaced by a bright yellow smiley face.

For visitors experiencing Banksy in Barcelona, the work reflects the artist’s continuing examination of authority, control, and public perception.

CCTV (1998)

CCTV presents surveillance cameras depicted as scorpions observing one another.

This work highlights concerns surrounding privacy, security, and state control, themes that remain central to Banksy’s artistic practice.

Ronald McDonald and Mickey Mouse: Capitalism Critiqued

In works such as Napalm, Banksy pairs Ronald McDonald and Mickey Mouse with a crying child.

This powerful juxtaposition critiques consumerism and the commodification of trauma, making it one of the strongest political statements within Banksy’s work.

Girl Frisking Soldier (2007)

This provocative artwork depicts a young girl frisking an armed soldier.

Like many works presented through Banksy in Barcelona, the image uses irony to reverse expectations and challenge established power structures.

This is a small collection, but the carefully chosen selection of great artists and pieces keeps a tourist, otherwise busy with all the city’s attractions , focused on the very best. Guillermo Lorca’s works are striking: fresh, imaginative, and captivating.

I especially loved how the exhibition combines world-famous artists like Banksy, Basquiat, and Andy Warhol with emerging digital creators and NFT art. It’s not a typical “quiet” museum it’s interactive, emotional, and modern. The NFT and digital rooms were fascinating they make you reflect on how art, technology, and human creativity are merging today. Lighting, music, and the flow between rooms are very well designed, so you never feel bored or overwhelmed. The curators clearly thought about how to make art feel accessible, emotional, and current. Staff were friendly and helpful, and the museum shop also has great souvenirs and art books.
