From the New York Subway to Keith Haring in London

Between 1980 and 1985, Haring used unused advertising panels throughout the New York City subway as surfaces for spontaneous chalk drawings. Working quickly and directly in public, he developed a visual vocabulary designed to communicate beyond the traditional boundaries of the art world.

That language soon travelled above ground.

Haring created thousands of subway drawings between 1980 and 1985. Drawing on the matte black construction paper covering old advertisements, he brought art directly into commuters’ daily lives. The subway offered something a gallery could not: immediate contact with a broad and diverse public.

This approach reflected a belief that ran throughout Haring’s practice: “Art is for everybody.”

From Chalk to Icon

Across prints, posters, publications, music, social campaigns and the Pop Shop, Haring repeatedly adapted the same recognisable figures and symbols to reach new audiences. His work could be playful and accessible while confronting subjects including inequality, nuclear disarmament, drug abuse and the AIDS crisis.

Haring’s signature style is defined by bold lines, bright colours and recurring characters. Figures such as Radiant Baby and Barking Dog became part of a visual vocabulary that could be read quickly and across cultural boundaries.

The simplicity is deceptive. Behind the playful forms sit questions about society, power and responsibility.

Universal Signs, Street Culture + Awareness

Haring believed art could be a tool for change. He used his platform to raise awareness around the AIDS epidemic and drug addiction, while his wider practice addressed social inequality and other urgent issues of his time.

His commitment to social justice also led to public murals, benefit projects and collaborations with other artists and activists. His figures often reveal no clear gender, race, religion or sexual orientation, reinforcing the universal quality of the language he developed.

Haring’s work moved freely between public space, popular culture and modern art. Accessibility was not separate from the work. It was central to how the work functioned.

Subway Drawings

The subway gave Haring an unusual canvas. Blank advertising spaces became temporary surfaces for chalk drawings that commuters encountered between trains, platforms and the rhythms of everyday New York.

Although these drawings existed only briefly, people began to recognise Haring’s work as it appeared across the city. He realised that the subway allowed his art to reach a public that might never otherwise encounter it.
